about ME

Abby Barclay (she/her) is a Full Spectrum Doula, Reiki Healer and the Development Manager at Birth Mark. She trained as a birth and postpartum doula with DONA and as an abortion doula with The Doula Project NYC.

After a 15 year career in the fashion industry, Abby left New York City and moved to Toronto where she began to pursue her heart-centred work as a doula. Becoming a doula felt like a true calling for her. It fulfilled her desire to be of greater service to her community and support birthing people in their reproductive health journey.

Her passion for supporting and empowering birthing people and her desire to create and hold space for the entire birth and parenting experience deeply motivates her as a doula. Though often times the journey of parenting can feel overwhelming, she believes that becoming a parent is one of the most transformational experiences in a person's life, and she aims to be a nonjudgmental and unbiased source of support during this intimate & sacred time.

Abby practices under a trauma informed, anti-oppressive and evidence-based model of care. She approaches each client with the belief that they are unique and that their choices deserve to be honoured. By showing up as a calm, trustworthy presence, and truly meeting her clients where they are on their journey, Abby provides individualized care and service that suits her client’s needs and goals.

Through her work with Birth Mark, Abby has had the privilege of supporting many families and individuals who otherwise would not have had access to a doula. Being a part of an organization whose mission is to make doulas accessible to everyone has been the perfect alignment of Abby’s ideals and goals in offering doula support.

Abby lives in Toronto with her partner and 13 year old Chihuahua, Poncho. When she’s not working as a doula, Abby enjoys practicing yoga, studying tarot, being outside in nature and cuddling with Poncho.

doula services

If doula were a drug, it would be unethical not to use it.

birth support

The Greek word Doula means "woman caregiver". As your birth doula, my aim is to be of service to you before, during and immediately after the transformational experience of birth.

My role as a doula is to provide for you and your partner or birth companion: emotional support, physical/hands-on support and comfort, informational support via resources & referrals, and advocacy by facilitating communication between you and your care provider.

I provide continuous care from the moment you request my presence at your labour until 1-2 hours postpartum. I will always have arrangements made with a back-up doula, to take over for me and ensure there is coverage if needed. I can provide support for you wherever you have chosen to have your birth: at home, birth center, or hospital.

postpartum support

The period of time after birth in which a postpartum doula would support a family is often referred to as the 4th Trimester. It is the 3 months directly following the delivery of the baby. During that time, I will be there to help you and your family as you transition into parenthood and adjust to your new schedule with baby. My role as a postpartum doula is to take care of  YOU so that you can focus on your baby. I will tailor my services to suit your needs based on what/where you require the most help or support. I work with families in 4 hour blocks of time, this allows me to serve and support your needs more effectively. I am also available to support your family overnight.

As your postpartum doula, I provide you and your family: emotional support, physical/hands-on support, especially if you are recovering from labour & delivery, information via resources & referrals, help with newborn care & the care of other children, and help with household chores and tasks such as meal preparation, laundry, cleaning/tidying, and walking the dog.

doula offerings

I support all birthing people, in all birthing places, with all care providers.

I begin all my doula services with a free in-person consultation. This meeting is an opportunity for us to get to know each other and for me to get a better understanding about your feelings and desires regarding your labour and birth. Most importantly, it is the time to make sure we are a good fit. I want you to be comfortable working with me at your most vulnerable!

REIKI services

The day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.
— Anais Nin

WHAT IS REIKI?

Reiki (pronounced ray-kee) is a modality of pure energy healing. As a Reiki practitioner, I have been attuned to the Reiki energy through initiation by a Reiki Master. Once attuned, I am a channel for the universal life-force energy, also known as Prana or Chi, to flow through my hands and into the person I am treating. My lineage follows the Usui tradition of Reiki and was passed down to me from my Sensei and Reiki Master, Rosemary Craig

There are no contraindications for Reiki; it is always safe to receive Reiki energy healing. It has been found that Reiki does not conflict with other health-care or wellness practices, and in fact, it is said that Reiki may enhance or facilitate the benefits of other healing modalities. Some benefits of Reiki are believed to be: speeding up natural healing processes post-injury or surgery, restoring energy whether ill or for health maintenance, and restoring emotional balance & well-being.

**Please note: The above claims are not based on medical or scientific research and have not been evaluated by a physician**

Testimonials

Abby is one of the warmest people I’ve met, the birth of my baby wouldn’t have been marvelous without her intuitive support. It was essential to have her, she helped me to ease the pain, feel strong during my hypnobirth and stick to the birth plan. She is gifted and has a special connection with female magic.
— V.C.
After months of suffering from chronic lower back pain and feeling completely discouraged, I sought my first reiki treatment with Abby.
She immediately put me at ease, and the entire experience was extremely positive and calming.
Shortly after, my lower back pain began to subside, and approximately 7 months later I can happily say the pain has stayed away!
— Jaime
I asked Abby to do a distance Reiki healing on an injury. Later that day, Abby contacted me to let me know she would be starting the session. Minutes later, I felt a soft relief in the injured area. Prior to this session, I was unsure if distance healing would work for me but this experience made me a believer. I have also received in-person reiki from Abby and found the experience to be incredibly relaxing and soothing. Abby is professional, kind, and warm. I highly recommend her!

faq's

WHEN SHOULD I HIRE A DOULA?

I would recommend hiring a doula sometime during the 2nd trimester, that way, we can maximize the amount of time we are working together, and I will be able to establish a better connection with you and your partner. It can also helpful if you have had the opportunity to take a childbirth education class before working with me. This can make our prenatal visits together more directed.

CAN A DOULA SUPPORT ME IF I HAVE A CESAREAN BIRTH?

Absolutely! Whether your Cesarean birth is scheduled, or unplanned, I will be there to support you. I will continue to advocate with you and facilitate communication between you and your care provider as new questions arise. Depending on how many support persons are allowed in the OR, I may or may not stay by your side during the operation, but I will be there afterwards to continue my support post-delivery. Once you are home, having a postpartum doula can be incredibly helpful and supportive after a Cesarean birth, as there can be reduced mobility and a longer physical recovery than with a vaginal birth.

WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU CAN'T ATTEND MY BIRTH?

I will make every effort possible to attend your birth! Of course, there is always the very small possibility that an emergency might arise. Good news! I always line-up a back up doula for my births, that you will have the opportunity to meet before

Reasons I might miss some or all of your birth and my back-up doula would step-in:

  • I have an overlapping birth occurring at the same time
  • I have supported you for more than 24 hours, and am no longer able to perform my role to my fullest capacity

WHEN DO YOU SCHEDULE YOUR PRENATAL VISITS?

After you have hired me as a doula, I would set up time to meet with you for prenatal visits. I like to see my clients around the end of the 2nd trimester and then again in the 3rd trimester.
